Vertical Dungeon Map

Paper Dungeon  is a pretty killer tumblr focusing on Hungarian sci-fi/fantasy art and weirdness.  Cherry pick the illest stuff from this and you would have one freaky D&D game!  Check out this killer Earthsea cover:

As a kid, I would've picked that book up immediately!  It looks a lot more bitchin, weirdo and a lot less new agey than the cover I grew up with!

Anyways, somewhere on page 23 of Paper Dungeons there is a killer little pic of this 2d Vertical Dungeon:

A couple random things:
1.   Where the hell does this comes from?  At least in not knowing we have free reign to fuck it up however we want.  I'm guessing it's from a video game of some sort?  Possibly a Castelvania esque one.
2.  The top of the dungeon looks like a Wizard's Hat! Maybe the entire dungeon is the petrified remains of a Giant Evil Wizard?!?!?!?
3.  Speaking of the top, I like that unlike most vertical dungeons, this ones starts from the bottom and goes up.
4..  I'm interpreting the openings in the side to be a myriad of cave entrances, which is a necessity if you are going to try Jacquaying your dungeon.  As there are already a few multiple paths to take, it shouldn't take much to turn this dungeon into something snappy.
6.  I have no idea what the solid purple balls are scattered around the map, any ideas?  Given the hidden/dangerous locations of most(behind the stairs/inside the top of a peak), I'm inclined to think: treasure chests. (loot ynq?)
7.  Those bizarre hedgehog demons are obviously just the minions, something truly badass has to live at the top of such a peak.

Bonus:  Scope this strange Hungarian zine.  Looks punk as a fuck, only missing the Discharge face:
